“The situation, as I see it, comes down to two alternatives. Either we decide to stand and fight, or we move away. ‘Stand and fight’ implies that we make preparations to beat them off, build defenses, arm ourselves strongly enough to beat off fairly heavy armor and a force probably three times the size of our own. That will require a lot of effort and investment of our time, and, in this open country, it will have at best a limited probability of success. This is a good farming area, but it will be hard to defend. ‘Move away’ means that we have to uproot everything that we’ve established here. That’s not too daunting a prospect. We decided, in the beginning, that this would be a temporary home, a base to use to look for an alternative, better, place to settle permanently. Most of what we have here can be relocated fairly easily, although it will be a big job. Fortunately, we have experience now in starting a farming operation, and it won’t be that difficult to transport the animals elsewhere. The crops are now almost all in, so there’s not much that we’ll lose in that regard.” Scott paused to assess the reception of his summary. The group had passed through the stage of bravado, of denying the enemy the victory, and had reached the stage of realizing that a defense of what they had might well cost the lives of at least some, and possibly all of them. It was a bitter pill to swallow. There was no response to his summary of their options. “In my opinion, the smart thing to do will be to move away, to find ourselves a new place to live. This time we can choose a place at our leisure, a place that we can defend more easily than this. America is a big country. We can move a thousand miles away, two thousand miles. We can make ourselves very difficult to find, and, if we choose the right place to settle, we can make their lives very difficult when they start looking for us.”

“How about attacking them, in the Base?” The speaker was Gerry Smith, one of the MPs.

“We’ve looked at that, Gerry, but there are two big problems. The first is that we don’t want to push them into action against us, any earlier that we need to. If we make life difficult for them in the Base, they could well take their chances with the radiation danger that we’ve convinced them still exists. That would be probable if they figure out that whatever we do is our doing. They already hate us, but they probably think we’re dead. It seems that the Chaplain has told them that God removed us from the Base. If they realize that we fooled them, there’s no telling what their reaction will be, but I’m willing to bet it won’t be pleasant. The second problem is that the Base was designed to be defended against a very strong attacking force.
